This past Sunday we had our monthly TableTalk Sunday. Instead of a guest speaker (which I need to line up for the upcoming months), we had some conversations on some video prompts I brought in,
First, we watched the following video. It was not something I had searched for or had heard that I needed to see. It was a random link on the sidebar was I was looking for some other materials. Hmm... Sh*tuff Christians Guys Say. It was a hoot. I find myself laughing at parts and relating. But then after I watched it again, it really struck me how there were some strong messages within the video

1) Swearing. We almost all do it. I know I swear at times; most likely when I hit my finger with a heavy object or I suddenly have that realization I forgot to do something my wife asked me multiple times do to. But covering up with 'appropriate' words like 'shitake mushrooms' or 'FUDGE' does not hide the intent. You know what you meant to say and so do those around you. So is it really any different because when I hear someone say 'gosh Darn' the real words pop into my brain.
I love sci-fi and it seems like in recent years they have figured out a way around censors. Let's make up a word that we can replace a curse word with so we can use it freely. BattleStar Galactica (amazing show) had frak and Firefly (love it) used Gorramn. We know what they mean and think the word, so are curse words really so bad?
I think it depends. In moments of shock, pain, and strong emotion I understand the release a good curse word brings. BUt then there are those people who use a swear word every 3 words. I think this is just wrong. If you cannot speak a concise, well framed idea without dropping down to use swear words for filler or to get a response, then maybe you should just keep your mouth shut.
Then there are the ones I do find offensive. Actually using God's name in vain or 'damning' something. God's name is truly magnificient and as such needs to be revered. We also need to leave the damning of stuff to God. He is the only one who can deliver both mercy and justice at the same time so maybe, just maybe we should leave these big things to him.
2) I love the portion where the 'guy' rattles off each new movie that has 'changed my life'. While funny, and I am sure most of us know someone like that, I think we need to see the importance of this part of the skit. Our lives SHOULD be changed by things on a regular basis. If you faith and understanding of God is exactly the same as it was 5, 3 or even a year ago, you need to get out of the rut. We need to constantly be challenging our understanding of God and our faith. If nothing has affected you recently, start reading more. Find a new blog or a new website to follow. Join a Bible study. Go on a mission trip. Do something so you are exposed to new things. It WILL affect your relationship with God and that is good.

Of course, another Skit Guy video. This was actually the first SG video I ever saw. It was back at Lab a few years ago and I was blown away.
Ephesians 2:10 is a verse I have hanging by my desk, reminding me each day I have work to do.
" For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do God's work, which God prepared in advance for us to do"
Good stuff. We had some great conversations on this video.
What would you have God chisel out of your life right now?
